2010 Reading Challenges

I am planning to undertake three reading challenges in 2010. One is genre based (kind of) and the other two are geographically based. The challenges I plan to do are reading 15 classic novels, read and review 8 novels by Australian authors, and the Global Challenge, which is 12 novels from different continents (I am undertaking the Medium level, as the Expert requires novels set in Antarctica, and I can't think of any that aren’t survival stories – I hate those!). I am not doing a challenge to read a certain number of books. I did the Shelfari 50 Book challenge in 2008, with the target of 150 books, and read 300. I just don't see the point in me personally trying to read a certain number of books. I already read too many LOL Below are the rules of the games. LOL I've already started on the Global Challenge – New Zealand and North America that is. I will start a Challenge page for these three challenges individually, once I start the challenges. Please feel free to undertake these challenges, and let me know of any others that are interesting! :D

Classics Challenge
I'm choosing to aim to read 15 classic novels in 2010.

Aussie Author Challenge

TOURIST - Read and review 3 books by 3 different Australian authors
FAIR DINKUM - Read and review 8 books by Australian authors (a minimum of 5 different Australian authors)

Global Challenge
http://2010globalchallenge.blogspot.com/2009/12/2010-global-reading-challenge.html

The Easy Challenge
Read one novel from each of these continents in the course of 2010:
  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Australasia
  • Europe
  • North America (incl Central America)
  • South America
From your own continent: try to find a country, state or author that is new to you.

The Medium Challenge
Read two novels from each of these continents in the course of 2010:
  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Australasia
  • Europe
  • North America (incl Central America)
  • South America
Try to find novels from twelve different countries or states.

The Expert Challenge
Read two novels from each of these continents in the course of 2010:
  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Australasia
  • Europe
  • North America (incl Central America)
  • South America
  • Add two novels which are set in Antarctica.
Select novels from fourteen different countries or states.

Edit: I am also going to do the Anita Blake Challenge. Laurell K Hamilton is one of my favourite authors, and it has been a while since I have read them all, and I dont think I have EVER read them in order LOL  The challenge is to read all of the Anita Blake series in order and to review them. There is a prize offered by Headline Review open to everyone who isnt in the US or Canada! Woohoo! I am excited about that because all competions are normally exclusive to the US and Canada LOL

Ooo good challenges! I might have to do those next year. I already have my reading plans set.

Do you mind if I nick these and add them to my Reading Challenge page?

This is Ms B, correct? haha as if you have to ask! The links to the challenges are because those sites are then collecting links to everyone who is doing them - and the aussie one is linking to the reviews... Looks like a good way to get traffic on your blog, as well as another challenge :D

I saw your challenges and was tempted, but I already had these ones. As this is a committment to read/review 35 books of a specific variety, i thought I should leave it at that. There are some great challenges out there... I found more i wanted to do, but I had to be realistic and limit them. Yes I read a lot of books, but I dont have a lot of discilpine when it comes to reading specific books LOL

Hi Jacq,
Thanks for visiting me at:
www.bibliojunkie.wordpress.com

do you know where I can sign up for the classics challenge? I have read 4 books of classics this Jan, so it would be great to sign up for the challenge!

keep the Aussie authors recommendation coming!

best wishes,
JoV

Yeah it's Ms B (and will be Dutchie from now on too, so you know). Sorry I should have said so. Just keeping you on your toes!

I'm not actually doing any of those challenges listed. The last challenge I set myself I didn't even get through and gave up pretty quickly.

I'll be looking out for your reviews (I was able to put your rss feed on my tool bar), especially of the Aussie ones.

Hi JoV,
I'll be back to your blog with some Aussie recommendations for you later - I'm mulling over a number of authors at the moment :)I just decided on my own that I was challenging myself to read a certain number of classics this year. I was reading too much pop culture, and not enough books of substance. I'm sure someone has an official challenge somewhere!! I just don't know of one.

Oh, Dutchie! I like it! LOL I could tell by your writing style and url who it could be, but I thought I would confirm before I took it at face value.

^I understand about the challenges. Its challenging! Especially when you have other commitmments, and health issues. I started to go a bit crazy, collecting challenges, and then I realised I should be more realistic. You know me, I read A LOT, but it tends to be all the same sort of books. So I wanted to mix it up a bit, push out a bit, but also be realistic in the fact that I get distracted, and sometimes I just need a good trashy paperback when the brain fog rolls in (lets face it, that is most of the time LOL).

Haha yes, the reviews... I got crazy witht he challenges, and then realised, wait a minute.. it means I need to sit down and do some writting.. I just dont bother with it any more, because of the fog. Its why my forum usage and blogging isnt as big as it used to be. I just cant bring my thoughts together enough to make sense to everyone else LOL

The challenges are challenging lol. I should think so!

But yeah I know, it can be hard to keep up with them with life and everything else.

It can also be so easy to get carried away with them because there's so many good ones.

You do I what I do when I get foggy. I tell myself I'm going to read something deep and meaningful, but just end up reading the usual YA fiction lol. It's easier.

Just an update, I created a specific challenge page for my Classics Challenge. This includes code for the challenge badge, a list of challenge levels, and if anyone wants to be listed, I will collect names, a link to your blog, and the level you choose. I created the page because a lot of people were asking me where I got my challenge from. It was just a personal challenge, but from the level of interested, I thought it was worth the time to create a badge :) so if you are still interest, the link is http://bookbitesoz.blogspot.com/2010/03/classic-novel-reading-challenge.html
